We should rather say, kids and children would be eager to know the story of limousine. Here goes the story…
The Word Limousine, An Interesting Story
Hey come on, before you ride on a luxury sedan limo or a stretch limousine you should know why it is named as limousine.
You know there were a group of people called the Lemovices. And they belonged to a tribe called the Gallic tribe. Primarily, they lived in a place called the Massif Central area.
Notably, in this area, the Lemovices lived in territories named Haute-vienne, Creuse, Corrèze and Charente. Furthermore, these territories belonged to France.
Your name has a meaning, right? Therefore there is a meaning for the word Lemovices. It means “conquerors with the elm”.
Interestingly, Lemovices gave their name to Limoge and to the province of Limousin.
Moreover, popular products such as Aubusson tapestries, enamels and porcelains were made in the capital city of Haute-Vienne, Limoges.
Now look at this interesting part. Apart from manufacturing the above products the shepherds also raised Limousin beef cattle.
Most importantly, the shepherds wore a long cloak associated with today’s lavish means of transport called Limousine.
Chiefly, the residents of the town wore hooded cloaks similar to the covered structure of early limos. It’s a stretch, but as it turns out, limousines are named after a town full of cloaked people.
That’s interesting isn’t!
When Did Chauffeur-Driven Service Actually Begin?
So what happened was, the concept of chauffeur-driven service first started in the 1700s. Oh mine! That’s long, long back. None of us were born to see the first limousines. Isn’t?
Furthermore, these first chauffeur-driven vehicles were run using horses. We mean, they were horse-drawn carriages. We know you will like to travel in one of those horses carriages and feel like a King/Queen or an army general!
But those days are gone!
The First Engine Powered Limousines
Later, horses were sent to the stable permanently.
What happened next?
In 1900, the first engine powered carriages came into operation. And they had two compartments. One compartment was for the chauffeur who drove the limousine.
We mean the driver seat and driver compartment was separate. And this chauffeur compartment was outside the carriage.
Another covered compartment was for the passengers. Moreover, in this carriage the driver and passengers were separated by a partition. Interestingly, the partition had a sliding sound proof glass that allowed the passengers to have a private conversation.
We know, by now you would have pictured it in your mind. Fantastic Right! Moreover, it was a luxury car of those days.
You should note an important point here. The first modern automobile limousine was created in 1902.
Importantly, the drivers were still seated outside the enclosed compartment of the vehicle. This exposed them to the elements of the weather. Therefore, they continued to wear hooded cloaks to protect them.
Notably, the word “limousine” was officially defined by the Society of Automobile Engineers in 1916. Here, it denoted an enclosed vehicle able to sit three to five people inside. And the driver’s seat outside of the enclosed compartment.
Wow! Finally you got the full meaning of the word “limousine”. Great!
Why Such Long Stretched Vehicles?
Those large luxury cars with great space inside stretched too long. Why?
In 1928 a Fort Smith, Arkansas company named Armbruster created the first “stretch” limousine.
These stretched cars were initially used to transport jazz celebrities and their big bands. Later, others began to embrace larger seating areas, and “stretch” limousines became a norm and part of life style.
Chiefly, Hummer, Cadillac, and Rolls Royce are a few luxury car companies that have transitioned into the stretch limo business over the years.
End Of The Story Kids!
Today limousines are considered a vivid form of prestige. Moreover, the wealthy have their own private vehicles.
Furthermore, these vehicles are today used for partying and other special occasions. Importantly, they can hold a large group of people and can be uniquely customized for entertainment and other purposes.
